every time we say goodbye

I love classic music. One of my favorite composers is Cole Porter. He has some really great songs. And of his songs, Every time we say goodbye, near the top of my favorites. The song popped in my head yesterday and has stayed there going on two days. Which reminded me of a movie i saw over Christmas break, Prelude to a kiss, with Alec Baldwin and Meg Ryan. The song was used a lot in the movie. The movie was very different but good none the less. I recommend both [but can only leave you a link to the song you S.O.L. on the movie].

Gripe...

I hate the cold weather, and i hate snow

that is all

planificar = to plan

OK, being a second year in med school there comes a time in your life where you need to sit down, take an inventory of your life, and think. The usmle step 1 [the most important test that of medschool] is about 18 weeks away. My goal today, besides regular lecture duties, is to sit down and formulate a plan of attack. This monster of a test encompasses all the information that I've learned/covered over the past two whirlwind years. What ever my plan is it has to be concise, smart and effective, because the outcome of this test kinda determines the outcome of my medical career... but no pressure right?

cool song and a cool dude

Listening to NPR today i heard a compelling interview with the author/director Eugene Jarecki. I will definitely be looking further into his writings and insights when i find the time.  His new book the American Way of War: Guided Missles, Misguided Men,and a Republic in Peril and his documentary is called Why We Fight. He talks about some serious topics and brings up some soul stirring points. Its a something to seriously look further into

on a much lighter note. Here is a cool Killers song

Origins

My blog started out in september 2007. It was started under the name mdinthedmv.blogspot.com.
I got over that name sometime in late 2008 so i changed the title to a variation of the Wailers song, Punky Reggae Party. I like the nom de guerre, Soul rebel, so i naturally just made a little switch and revamped my blog. But anyway this isnt going to be a long post, because i have a Gastrointestinal test tomorrow, I was just givin some background.

here is the song, its one of my favorites. I sometimes like to spaz out and dance like a a reggae rocker to this. [lol enjoy the mental image, and if you cant look up the movie Rockers on youtube, you will understand after you see the dance hall scene]

Punky Reggae Party - Bob Marley & The Wailers

Las Cosas

Ok its been a while since i posted my 5 hot things.  So I'll just jump into it..

-Music-
I have a thing for folk music. I dont really know where it came from. But i heard this Feist track that was a cover of this British folk godess from the 60s, Vashti bunyan. Turns out that after she released her first CD she quit the music scene and kinda recently she developed a finding. She became famous again and didnt even know it.
here are two songs the song Feist covered is first.
Same But Different - Vashti Bunyan

-Style-
I'm pretty sure I've mentioned this earlier on my blog, but i def feel a shift in my own style.
There are a few fold at GQ who really do a great job and find some really cool things that i do
appreciate. Im a pretty avid gq-phile, i  don't subscribe to GQ for the pictures, those are just a plus. I check out the sartorialist's blog from time to time and also men.style.com for his other postings at GQ. Through all that browsing i found a dude who,for lack of a better expression, knows his style shit.  Its one thing to wear nice clothes but you gotta have a swagger with it. [i guess cool accessories dont hurt either]

- Movie-
I haven't been to the movies in ages. But i saw the restricted trailer to I love you man. That shit is funny. It comes out March 30th
you gotta be 18 to see it!

-Trend-
MAN BAGS, no not what you're thinking. I am totally against murses [man purses]. But as a
budding professional I have stacks of papers and books and all types of stuff that i need to lug around. My north face back back is only gonna go but so far. Like i said, man purses are def not hot. There is a thin line to walk when you get a man bag, they have to be manly enough but
stylish. Man bags dont even have to be bags, they can be briefcases.
just beware the murse. I guess the main point is to avoid anything that looks like a purse.
[here's a couple acceptable man bags]

- The brief case to the left is pretty dope. Its real sleek and professional looking
-The bag to the right is big enough and it has a utilitarian look. No bells and whistles, just a man bag with a purpose.

-CHANGE-
I knows its been done. Its been said. Its The hottest news story in the world; but despite all of that. I have to say it, because no matter what. This inauguration and swearing in the first black president means so much to me. It says a lot for this country to have done what it, considering how conditions were a mere 40 some years ago. WE have mad leaps and bounds as a nation, but as Black people [and Hispanic for that matter] we cannot become complacent and not keep moving forward. This election was not some magical happenstance that cleared up all of the problems that we have. Now more than ever should be become more proactive in making a difference and closing the gaps that we as minorities face.

food for thought

well my friends, im tired and i have a LONG day ahead of me.

So much to say...

But so little time.

I cant really say anything that hasn't been said about the inauguration. I just feel immensely blessed to have been there and witness it all. So I'll leave you with the benediction from the right reverend Joseph Lowery.

History

As i sit here on the cusp of history. I find myself welling up with a vast range of emotions. To just sit and think, really think about how far my people have come; i feel an unadulterated gratefulness and am left in awe. I sat in my car and listened to an interview with the Reverend Joseph Lowery, and earlier today listened to a great piece on an urban radio station, it was Ray Charles "America the Beautiful" with clips the "I have a Dream" speech and sound bites taken during the 2008  election.  So on this Martin Luther King Jr. day, i post this speech, such a timely and timeless speech, delivered some 40 plus years ago. Greatness is not made, it rises up when we need it most.

Calmar = to calm

I sometimes worry that with all the music i post that this will be viewed as a music blog.  But whatever... There are many a day when i just to sit back, relax and try to clear my head. When those days come i listen to music. I dont have any one particular genre, there are just certain artists that can help me settle my nerves. Here are some great songs.

Train Song - Feist and Ben Gibbard
Deep Blue Sea - Dan Rossen of Grizzly Bear

Angel Eyes - Ella Fitzgerald

Ay, the anticipation

Ok, we are a week and day away from Barack Obamas inaugeration, and the anticipation is killin me. I have a weird anticipatory feeling that i cannot shake. I've never felt so personally vesting in politics. Barack Obama and his political team have done a really good job. They found a way to humanize him and make people feel that they actually know him.

Its a brand new feeling for me because i've been generally detached from politics [ i mean, i know whats goin on, but in a kind of apathetic way] But now im actually going to put a portrait of the man in my house, like in those old 50's and 60's movies. You know the ones, they had the white jesus and the current president hanging in the family room.

Its a good feeling because for my whole life i've honestly felt apathetic to many aspects of American culture. I guess this whole election has made me feel like, the son of an African American man and a Panamanian afro latina is just as American as the next guy. For my whole life i kinda felt like somewhat of a pilgrim, someone just passing through. Never really home. I know one thing, Inspiration is something that doesn't come all too often but when it comes, it can move you to the core

Oh Yeah...

I almost forgot...The sartorialist recently posted something about one thing Im pretty into this season. Plaided coats. I recently bought a dark green buffalo plaid pea coat. It was fresh at first sight. I got it fitted cause otherwise it'd look like a jolly green giant.

I also finally got to cop a chunky knit hat in royal blue [so you know im pleased with that]

<---- this is the hat but its cooler on me lol

Well Im bout to get ready for bed. We started the Gastointestinal Unit this week so Im hittin it hard and studying well. I'm making sure that everything works very well this semester because I have the boards coming up this summer and because i start physical diagnosis, and since i want to become a diagnostician this is pretty big. Im pretty excited to get my proverbial hands dirty. My preceptor is a family practioner so i should be fine, thats not too far off from an internist.

So Before i bid a fare well i wanted to put yall up on game and post this song.

I have a real love/hate thing with nina simone. I love her songs but sometimes i cant get past her voice. I dont know, Im very tonal, if you get what im gettin at. I like the tone of voices. You dont have to be that great of a singer to impress me, i just like voices that sound good. But whatever, Its late and i got ish to do
P.s. : Q-tip+ Raphael Saadiq = Greatness

Escribir = to write

So i have a creative streak. I have a lot to say and i always have songs goin through my head [some original, some not]. Today i actually wrote one down. I guess i was inspired by a pretty dope song i heard from my homeboy. Its not my first written, nor is it the best but, I wanna put it out there for whomever.
Its called [Pointing out the sun]. I have the music all worked out in my head [ acoustic guitar and piano mainly w/a lil wheepy violin] but i guess all i can do now is post the words.

[Pointing out the Sun]
You ask me if I love you
You question if I care
You ask me all these things
-as if you're not aware

Can an apple make a pie?
Are there clouds up in the sky?
Do the numbers start with one?
When its finished am I done?

To tell you that I love you feels like point out the sun

Does a bell know how to ring?
Is this a song I sing?
Is the Ocean very deep?
Do my heart, you own and keep?

To tell you that I love you feels like pointing out the sun

todopoderoso= Almighty

I love that word, Todopoderoso. It sounds cool, it even feels cool to say it. El todopoderoso es el senor, Es el que todo lo sabe, es el que todo lo ve. Thats all you have to accept and acknowledge, thats it. I know its hard to take yourself out of the equation and to yield yourself to his will. But when times are hard you feel all alone all we have is that inborn feeling; the one that knows without a doubt that there is a god who is bigger and greater than us. Shoot, Let me stop preaching lol
